I think it was around 10, 11 and I remember having a serious conversation with dad about where I wanted to take surfing. And I was like, "I want to be the best."

Carissa really is an ambassador of aloha. She's always been my inspiration, my role model in life.

Before Carissa, there wasn't a lot of child prodigy female surfers.

I have [my dad’s] DNA, so a lot of this passion comes from him. When he used to surf, he was very raw and powerful. He taught me how to be smooth.

As a family, we're all pretty emotional people. I don't even know if I ever called him Kolohe. I call him Brother.

I just want to be in the water all the time. If I'm not in the water, I'm not very stoked.
